Kathryn Rubish - Writing Instructor

Native Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Graduate, Ms. Rubish returns to the area after spending time in New York City and Washington, DC. She has her undergraduate degree in elementary education from UNC-Wilimington, and masters as a Literacy Specialist from Columbia University, with an additional ESL license. She is a current first grade teacher at Rashkis Elementary. She has a passion for supporting SEL, and integrating high-interest in learning. She loves spending time with her dog Atticus, reading thriller novels and cooking.

Julie Salinas - Writing Instructor

Julie has been teaching grades K-5 for 17 years in the areas of music and elementary education. Born and raised in Hillsborough, she received her undergraduate degree from Elon University. After serving students in Virginia for 11 years she has finally come back home to this area where she has been teaching 1st grade at Rashkis for the past 6 years. Julie enjoys spending time with her husband and two boys, going for walks, and reading mystery novels by her favorite author Ted Dekker.

Gardening Camp

Laura Bobis Olley - Instructor

Laura is the school social worker at McDougle Elementary School. Prior to her 9 years at McDougle Elementary, since obtaining her social work degree in 2005 from UNC, she was a practicing child and family therapist with Carolina Outreach, LLC. Hailing from the colder climbs of Syracuse and Rochester, NY, she moved to be close to a childhood best-friend in Chapel Hill in 1999.  Laura loves working and raising her daughter, now a middle-schooler, in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro community. Laura is an avid artist in her spare time, studying painting and ceramics and practicing those passions on the side. Laura also enjoys gardening and instilling love and appreciation of the natural world in her students as well.

Gardening Camp

Joshua Rose - Instructor

Joshua Rose is a singer-songwriter and performer who works as an instructional assistant at McDougle Elementary School.  He grew up in Hillsborough, but has lived all over the world in pursuit of musical and acting opportunities. Josh enjoys creating art in various mediums including drawing, painting, ceramics, and digital arts. He has enjoyed participating in art shows and film and television productions. Josh loves fostering a sense of confidence and positivity in his students, and believes in the importance of art in helping children to find their voice. He also believes that connecting with nature and nurturing plants can teach us to nurture ourselves and those around us.

Book Creation Camp - Under The Sea

Kendall Rogers - Writing Instructor

Kendall is in her 15th year of teaching and is a first grade teacher at Rashkis Elementary. She has experience teaching kindergarteners - fifth graders and especially loves teaching literacy. Kendall grew up in the CHCCS district and has spent most of her career in Chapel Hill schools. Her time away from school is spent with family, caring for her two young daughters.

Book Creation Camp - Under The Sea

Laura Harris - Writing Instructor

Laura has been an elementary educator for 24 years, with 20 years in CHCCS at Rashkis Elementary.  She graduated from UNC at Greensboro with a degree in elementary education and most recently completed certification at NC State.  She is a true local growing up right down the road in Hillsborough. Her love and dedication for helping kids grow as learners pairs beautifully with ArtzHub’s central purpose - to provide a meaningful and unique springboard for young imaginations!

This is Laura’s second summer leading an ArtzHub camp and we are thrilled to have her back. She’s bringing her whole Rashkis 1st grade team with her this summer!

Painting On Canvas Camps Provided By Evan Hirasawa (Ms. Evy!)

Evan is a local artist, certified art teacher and experienced school teacher. She has resided in Chapel Hill for the past 29 years while enjoying bringing the arts and her teaching skills to art galleries, art students and school curriculums. Her education includes a BFA from The Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and M.Ed in Education with a focus on the Creative Arts from Lesley College in Cambridge, MA. She also studied Fine Arts at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington D.C. and traveled to Japan to study the traditional Arts of Japan.

Music Camp Provided By Dr. Daniel Steinert

“Dr. Dan the Music Man” knows the joy of being a lifelong musician, performer and teacher and hopes for every child to have the opportunities to learn the joy of making music. He learned to play piano at age 5, pipe organ and French horn at age 12, sang in children’s and collegiate choirs, then toured with the world-renowned Westminster Choir and performed at all the great concert halls on the East Coast, including Carnegie Hall with his Christ Church Chancel Choir members! Additionally, he has taught music and conducted orchestras at the collegiate level for 14 years (Louisburg College and UW-Marshfield). He is the Founding Director of the Northeast Piedmont Chorale, was named the Franklin County “Artist of the Year,” and led the Louisburg College Ensemble on a performing tour to London, England. As accompanist for the Fearrington Village Singers, that ensemble was featured in the December 2025 issue of Our State magazine. (read more)
